The Quadrella

The Quadrella
The Quadrella is an investment medium that requires the forecast of the outcomes of four races nominated by the Totalisator Agency Board (TAB) at a meeting. The Quadrella in its current form was introduced by the TAB in Victoria in May, 1987.

The Best Investment Medium
The Quadrella has been an unqualified success since day one. The Age newspaper reported that just a month after its launch the Quadrella had already overtaken doubles as the most favoured exotic investment medium. In April 2008 it was reported in Hansard in a sitting of the NSW parliament that “consumer preferences continue to shift towards the exotic investment options such as the Quadrella”.

Since being launched, the Quadrella has expanded markedly. Rather than only operating on the main race meeting in Victoria, it is now offered on every meeting, every day of the week. Demand for the Quadrella saw it spread into N.S.W. in 2004 and into Queensland and South Australia in 2007. Many corporate bookmakers like Sportingbet have recognized the demand for Quadrellas and have introduced them during 2009.

The Quadrella’s growing popularity can be attributed to a number of factors including –

  • The Quadrella returns sizeable dividends for correctly forecasting what are basically four predictable outcomes. Unlike Lotto, where winning is all based on the luck of the draw, investors with the right knowledge can influence their chances of winning Quadrella dividends.
  • Large Quadrella payouts occur regularly and dividends in the tens of thousands of dollars are common. The investment medium has captured the public’s imagination with dividends as high as $1.1 million (November 2007).
  • The recent introduction by the TAB of Regular Jackpots has made dividends larger. The TAB often kicks in Jackpots of $100,000 or more to Quadrella pools. This is essentially ‘free money’ on offer to investors.
  • The introduction of Flexi Betting has made the larger dividends easier to win.
Flexi betting allows you to include more runners for a lower cost in a Quadrella combination. It also increases your likelihood of collecting large dividends as you are able to include more value long shots in your Quadrellas.
  • The Massive Pools
Every day up to $2 million dollars is invested on Quadrellas around Australia. Most of this is from punters having a ‘casual Quaddie’ as an afterthought to their main investments. There is more of this 'uneducated money in Quadrella pools than the pools of any other bet type.
  • The commission take out on the Quadrella is relatively low meaning that more is given back to investors as dividends (See 'The Maths' below).
  • Dividends are available to investors on the same day. The daily payment of dividends compares more than favourably with other investment options - equities for example, where dividends are paid annually.

“Every day up to $2 million dollars is invested on Quadrellas
around Australia – and most of that amount is returned to
investors as dividends on the same day”.

  • The Quadrella only requires a small investment to be in the running to obtain the substantial dividends on offer. As the amount of required investment is low, so is the level of risk.
  • There are many opportunities to reap the rewards offered by the investment medium as the Quadrella operates every day of the week.
  • Quadrella dividends are tax free for investors.

What the Experts Say
One of the most successful racing investment companies Australia has seen, Ferncourt Pty. Ltd., was headed up by John Manuel. In a rare interview Manuel was once asked “What is the best betting medium in Australia?”. Without hesitation he replied “The Quadrella”. Manuel certainly knows a lot about the subject of racing investment. In 2003 corporate bookmaker IAS reportedly paid $18 million to buy his company Ferncourt - primarily for its racing investment expertise, or to put it more succinctly - punting 'know how'.

What is the best betting medium in Australia?
Without hesitation he replied - The Quadrella

High profile racing investor Stewart Davidson commented in a Sydney Morning Herald interview that Quadrellas are a good investment medium "If you want to win a heck of a lot for very little”.

Mathematician Rodger Dedman in his book Commonsense Punting said “Consistent profits can be made from the Quadrella” and cited that “Some small punters are well ahead on their Quadrella operations thanks to one or two windfalls”. This potential to make sizeable profits from just a couple of good results is another reason why the Quadrella is such an enticing investment option.

Quaddie.com - the Authority on Quadrellas
During 1986-87 we worked on the development of the Quadrella with the Totalisator Agency Board of Victoria (TAB). We have also studied punters’ betting patterns in relation to the Quadrella. These betting patterns have a big impact on the final dividends. We therefore understand the structure of the bet type and how to formulate Quadrella combinations aimed at obtaining the best value and returns from the investment medium. The Maths of Quadrella Investing - Why it Adds Up
We need to get our heads around the maths to fully understand why the Quadrella is such a great investment medium. In his landmark book ‘Winning More’ Don Scott explained it this way - He said ”The commission on the Quadrella is 20%. This means you are taxed at a rate of only 5% for each of the four winners as against the 14.5% you pay for backing each single winner on the TAB. You must conclude that it is far more profitable to play the Quadrella than to try to back single winners straight out. For punters seeking value, Quadrella betting is obligatory”.

The Quadrella also out performs the new BIG 6 bet type as an investment medium. The commission take out on the Big 6 is 25% compared to 20% for the Quadrella – a difference of 25%. This means that much more is given back as dividends to Quadrella investors than to BIG 6 punters.
